Training programme for people wishing to lead community groups in the outdoors

This package is designed to give Youth and Community Leaders and other appropriate adults the basic skills to take groups for activity sessions in the outdoors. It is fully funded by NRW.

Part 1

A 2 day week-end course at the Woodland Skills Centre

  • Basic safety in the outdoors
  • Safe tool use (secateurs, lopper, pruning saw etc)
  • Principles of woodland management
  • Basic woodland ecology
  • Tree ID and uses of trees, edibility of wild plants
  • Practical woodland management activities – planting, formative pruning, coppicing
  • Simple coppice crafts – hazel hurdles, pot stands, tent pegs

Part 2

A 2 day week-end course in Bushcraft:

  • Natural fire-lighting techniques
  • Shelter building
  • Seasonal wild food and medicinal plants
  • Camp Cooking
  • Using natural materials to make useful artefacts
  • Knife and axe work
  • Tracking and navigation techniques

All courses will be delivered at the Woodland Skills Centre in Bodfari. All the Centre staff are professionally qualified, have full insurance and appropriate first aid certifcates and are experienced in this work. The Centre has a 50 acre site, workshops and meeting rooms.

Each student who completes the course will be given a Woodland Skills Centre certificate of attendance detailing the course content and will be abe to buy a basic Bushcraft kit of knife, firesteel and pruning saw (value £75-00) for a cost of £25.
