Scouts at home

While we all have to stay at home at the moment to help the NHS and save lives, we can still carry on with Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

Some Groups and Units are setting weekly challenges, and we as a District are also giving you things you can do. Here’s your latest…

  • Survival week 2

Hope you all managed to build your shelters at home last week!? Remember, if you want to earn your survival badge you need to send photos to your leader or post on your Section’s Facebook group.

This week we want you to make your own Survival Kit!

First of all you’ll need a suitable container. It needs to be small enough to carry around with you, but large enough to fit everything in. It also needs to be waterproof and hard wearing. Here’s what needs to go in to it…

    • Fire lighting kit
      • Windproof matches
      • Flint and steel
      • Cotton wool balls
    • Food and water
      • Water purification tablets
      • Fishing line
      • Hooks
      • Weights
      • Float
      • Copper snare wire 0.6mm
    • Navigation and signalling
      • Whistle
      • Signal mirror
      • Pencil
      • Paper
      • Button compass
    • Tools and materials
      • Fixed blade/Swiss army knife
      • P-38 can opener
      • Heavy duty needle and thread
      • Para cord
      • Tallow candle
      • Wire steel saw

There may well be quite a lot of this you can’t get your hands on during lockdown, but make a start and add the items you don’t have as and when you get chance.

  • Care for care homes

Show you #CareForCareHomes. Over the next few weeks, Scouts are working with the British Red Cross and the National Care Association to do 10,000 acts of kindness to improve the wellbeing of people in care homes and reduce social isolation. Get involved:

  • Creative badge

This week we’re going to start working on the Creative badge.

First of all, as you are on your daily walk or playing in the garden, collect items around you and make a collage or a picture of something.

Then we want you to build something out of lego, or plasticine.

If you’ve done both of these, have a look what else there is to do for the Creative badge.

We need to see photos of what you have done – so please send these to your Leader or post on your Section Facebook group.
