Cub Scouts from 6th Wrexham joined over 1,200 Cub Scouts from across England and Wales to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting at a week-long camp at Gilwell Park Activity Centre. The event – called CubJam – is the biggest Cub Scout camp in 10 years.
The theme for the week-long camp was the Wild West. Cub Scouts had the opportunity to try their hand at caving, archery, bungee running, zorbing and motor racing, as well as take part a variety of traditional camp-based activities.
Chief Scout and adventurer Bear Grylls flew in by helicopter to meet some of the Cub Scouts before taking off to visit six further locations across the UK. Cub Scouting’s ambassador and fellow adventurer Steve Backshall also attended the camp later in the week
The event is part of Cubs 100 – a year-long programme of events in celebration of the Cubs’ centenary year in 2016. Over 156,000 Cub Scouts will have the opportunity to get involved with the Widest Birthday Ever! experience, creating new memories and friendships throughout the year.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, The LEGO Group sent the UK’s only LEGO Certified Professional builder, Duncan Titmarsh, along to the event to construct a celebration cake made entirely of LEGO bricks. The cake was made up of over 22,000 LEGO bricks as well as 100 LEGO candles and took an average of 120 hours to build! Cub Scouts from CubJam helped Duncan and his team build the creative image on the top of the cake.
The Scout Association hopes that Cubs 100 will help to further the growth of the Movement among both young people and adult volunteers.
Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “I am super proud to be a part of celebrating 100 years of Cub Scouting by visiting over 1,200 buzzing girls and boys at CubJam. This event is unique as it gives a chance for Cubs across the UK to meet up and share fun and adventures in a way that only Scouting can!”
Leo, aged 9, Cub Scout from Wrexham, said: “CubJam is good! I love the zorbing and the wipeout zone! I love doing the lego cake – all the pieces fit are different but all fit together – it’s really interesting.”
“Most people don’t realise how much fun it is being a volunteer with Scouting. It’s great to put my spare time into something that makes such a difference to so many boys and girls. It helps them to believe they can do anything. I love being part of a team with a like-minded bunch of people running events like this. You can’t beat the feeling when you see the young people having so much fun.”
